On Saturday, June 10, 1978, New York City Police Officer William McNamara was on routine uniformed foot patrol on a busy street of Harlem, when he was attacked by Solomon Gideon. High on PCP, Gideon distracted Officer McNamara and ripped Bill’s gun from its holster and emptied it into the officer. The shots severed his spine and punctured his heart. As Bill lay dying on the sidewalk, Gideon continued to savagely pistol-whip the downed officer, fracturing his face and knocking out his teeth.

Gideon received 25 years to life for his violent and senseless crime; Bill received a life sentence of pain and suffering. Bill’s health has been deteriorating and since the last Parole hearing has been admitted to the Hospital several times for complications from the attack. Gideon has never expressed any sign of remorse for this vicious crime. Bill was twenty-four years old at the time of this attack, has spent a lifetime confined to a wheelchair, paralyzed and suffering from this attack.

Gideon should NOT BE PAROLED!!!

Topic: Correctional Services

Subject: Solomon Gideon DIN # 79A4202

To Commissioner NYS Division of Parole:

Now this attempted cop killer, Gideon, is vying for parole. He has had numerous infractions and incidents in the correctional facility during his incarceration, and shows no sign of remorse for his crime. I, urge the Parole Division of the State of New York to deny the parole petition of this remorseless, irresponsible criminal. As far as I am concerned, Gideon lost his right to freedom the day he decided to try to kill a New York City police officer with a hail of bullets.  We believe that cop killers - and attempted cop killers - belong permanently in jail.  The State should not reward this criminal with parole simply because he failed in his mission to murder a Police Officer.

Retired police Officer William McNamara never shirked his civic duty. He patrolled New York City housing projects until Solomon Gideon, a junkie high on angel dust, shot and paralyzed him more than 30 years ago. & HE GOT SCREWED by the Department! Police Officer Bill McNamara - a Medal of Honor recipient was forced off the NYC Housing PD shortly after he was shot and paralyzed in the line of duty in 1978. For the last 35 years he has been confined to a wheelchair. He never signed his retirement papers and Ben Ward who was the Chief of the Housing Police had them submitted despite McNamara's protest. Chief Ward failed to exempt him from forced retirement as he did for 4 existing and one newly injured LOD police officer when he became PC.

Due to contractual parity and the unlimited sick leave provision McNamara was entitled to should have been treated equivalently to members of the NYPD who are exempt from mandatory retirement until age 63 due to having suffered catastrophic LOD injuries. Nobody stood up for Bill then and nobody is standing up for him now. He has been totally abandoned by this city, the elected officials, and even the Union that he pays dues to. For years Bill has tried to get to a meeting with the Police Commissioner, Mayor, the Chairman of the Housing Authority & PBA President, all of whom have been too busy to see him or even to take time to look into any of his issues or problems.

Bill's forced retirement left him without a support system and with a pension that is below the poverty level. He repeatedly requested a pension review or at least a waiver from the City to return to the Police Department in some capacity or even a waiver to a be a teacher with the Department of Education for which he has a certification but nobody will even grant him a 20 minute meeting. The mistreatment he has suffered has been monumental with no end in sight. Bill is not looking for anything more than he is entitled to and just getting a waiver to work for the City shouldn't be such a big deal.

Now also we must ensure his shooter stays in Jail with NO PAROLE!!!  Please help!!!
